Perspective

Perspective

A framework for thinking about markets and other complex systems without pretending uncertainty can be eliminated.

Starting point

Context matters

Investment markets are systems of prices, expectations, incentives, institutions, laws, technologies, and people. Looking only at securities can miss the forces that determine why capital moves, why behavior changes, or why an apparently rational policy creates an unexpected result.

My preference is to begin with the broader system, identify the mechanism that matters, and then narrow the analysis. That does not make a conclusion certain. It makes the reasoning easier to inspect.

Principles

Six habits that shape how I think

Evidence before certainty

Strong opinions should follow strong evidence. Confidence should reflect the quality of the evidence, not the volume of the argument.

History widens the comparison set

History does not repeat cleanly, but it provides more cases, more institutional variation, and more examples of how people responded to pressure.

Incentives matter

Policies, organizations, markets, and individuals often behave differently once incentives change. The stated objective is not enough.

Second-order effects matter

The immediate effect of a decision is often the easiest part to see. The more important consequences may appear after people adapt.

Time horizon changes the answer

A development that is decisive over three months may be noise over ten years, and a slow structural change may matter more than a dramatic headline.

Judgment still matters

Models organize information. They do not remove the need to decide which assumptions are reasonable, which evidence is relevant, and when a regime has changed.

Discipline

What would change the conclusion?

One of the most useful questions in research is not “Why am I right?” but “What evidence would make this view wrong?” A conclusion that cannot be revised is not analysis; it is commitment.

I try to make assumptions visible, distinguish durable facts from temporary conditions, and revisit a view when the evidence no longer supports it.
