Interests

Intellectual Interests

The subjects I read, study, write about, and return to because they help explain how people, institutions, markets, and societies change.

Writing and research across multiple disciplines

Areas of inquiry

Subjects that inform the work and writing

Investing & Markets

Portfolio construction, valuation, market structure, risk, fixed income, alternatives, investor behavior, and the interaction between capital and expectations.

Economics & Political Economy

Growth, inflation, trade, fiscal and monetary policy, regulation, political incentives, and the distributional effects of economic choices.

History & Institutions

How institutions develop, why some endure, how crises change them, and what historical comparison can and cannot tell us about the present.

Leadership & Organizations

Decision rights, incentives, culture, governance, execution, and the practical problem of turning a strategy into coordinated action.

Technology & Society

Artificial intelligence, automation, data, digital infrastructure, and the way technological change alters work, markets, organizations, and human judgment.

Personal Finance & Wealth

How households make long-horizon decisions about saving, investing, retirement, taxes, risk, family obligations, and the use of capital.

Philanthropy & Legacy

The relationship between capital, purpose, charitable structures, stewardship, family continuity, and the responsibilities that accompany wealth.

Local History, Place & Travel

The history of places, the institutions and architecture that shape them, and what travel reveals about continuity, identity, and change.

Why the range matters

Specialization is useful; connections are often more useful

The point of a broad set of interests is not to claim expertise in everything. It is to recognize when a decision in one domain is being driven by something outside it. Markets can be moved by policy, technology can change market structure, history can reveal institutional constraints, and leadership can determine whether any plan survives implementation.
