THE NOTEBOOK

Entrepreneurship

Stephen Kovach on entrepreneurship: building businesses, allocating capital, understanding risk, and developing the systems that turn ideas into work.

Editorial illustration of a research desk.

Entrepreneurship puts ideas under practical pressure. A concept has to meet a real need, earn the resources it consumes, and survive the daily work of serving people. That process interests me as both a business owner and an investor.

Start with the problem

The first question is what deserves to be built. An attractive market or an interesting technology is a beginning, but a business needs a clear purpose: a problem people recognize, a credible way to solve it, and a reason they would choose that solution. The discipline is to make those assumptions explicit before enthusiasm turns into commitment.

Capital has a job to do

Money, time, and attention are scarce. Deciding where to put them requires a view of costs, cash flows, uncertainty, and the alternatives being passed over. A forecast becomes more useful when its assumptions can be changed and its weak points can be seen. The practical question is whether the next commitment is justified by what is currently known.

Build the operating system

A company is also a collection of decisions, responsibilities, and routines. Who owns a task? Which information is needed? What happens when a process fails? How does work move from an idea to a completed outcome? Clear answers make an organization easier to manage and help technology serve a defined purpose.

Risk belongs in the discussion

Execution, regulation, customer demand, financing, and technological change can each alter an opportunity. Naming those risks does not settle the decision. It helps determine what to test, what to defer, and where a smaller step can produce better evidence.

Learning through the work

My companies and developing initiatives provide different settings for these questions, from financial services and insurance to technology, education, and mobility. Each has its own economics and responsibilities. I use this section to explore the decisions behind building, with the status of each venture stated clearly.
